World History for Tuesday, April 21

Following the Absolute Monarchs came the Age of Revolutions. Leading it ideologically and chronologically was the American Revolution. You will study it in great detail in US History so we don't do much with it in World. However, the US is called an Enlightenment nation because as we had our revolution and formed our government the ideas of the Enlightenment guided every step. The Declaration of Independence is almost verbatim John Locke's Natural Rights Philosophy:

  • The very purpose of government is protect the rights of the people
  • If it does not protect our rights then it should be "altered or abolished"
  • Government gets its power from the "consent of the governed," the people
As the Americans successfully revolted against England in 1776, a series of revolutions followed. Today we focus on the Latin American revolutions. Tomorrow, we will review this unit on Absolutism to Revolution and test on it Thursday.
